Online Bullying or Harasment of Students

Stone, Carolyn Ed.D "Cyber Bullying: Disruptive Conduct or Free Speech?"  SchoolCounselor.org 1 May 2013

This article was written by Carolyn Stone, she is a member of the ASCA which stands for American School Counselor Association.  She reviews several different cases involving online bullying and harassment.  In some of the cases the judges ruled that it was correct and justified to punish the online intimidator.  On the other hand a few other judges ruled that punishing an online aggressor goes against the students first amendment rights.  The current guidelines for online bullying or harassment only states that it is a violation of the disruption test.  This means that schools may only discipline if the students actions interferes with or disrupts the work and discipline of the school.  Carolyn believes that the court systems need to establish set guidelines and standards to determine whether online bullying or harassment is a violation.  This will help schools know whether or not their actions are just and make the decisions much easier when it comes to this subject.  Carolyn is a member of the ASCA which leads me to believe she is a well informed and reliable individual.  This is a fairly up to date article written in May of 2013 and includes references from 2012.  What Carolyn has to say makes complete sense.  As someone who is going into the teaching profession I believe it would be a great thing to have set guidelines and standards as to what crosses the line and deserves to be dealt with.  It would save a lot of the teachers, counselors, and principles time to not have to determine whether a student's online actions are punishable or not.  As disciplinarians they deserve to know whether their actions are just or not.  They should not have to punish or not punish a student and then be fearful of whether or not they themselves will get in trouble.

This video is short but the message is strong.  It is a symbolistic way to show how the little things you say through text, email, social media, etc. can affect someone and stay with them.  This is an exaggerated video to convey their message across.  This video was a television commercial to raise awareness of how cyber bullying and harassment have got out of control.  Kids and teenagers are influenced greatly by what their peers think about them and when they are put down by one of them they take it to heart.
